Gennum: Canadian developer of high-end video processing chips used in video processors, televisions, video projectors, and other video devices. Gennum’s products compete with high-end products from Faroudja and the HQV line from Silicon Optix.   Gennum’s VXP business was later sold to Sigma Designs.  See Faroudja, HQV, VXP.

Golden-Eared Audiophile: An audiophile who claims to have listening ability much more acute and discriminating than others, to the extent of being able to hear things others cannot, such as the difference between different speaker wires. Golden-Ears believe their superior hearing ability to be a gift at birth, a skill refined through practice, or a combination of both. Many golden-eared audiophiles are unable to prove their superior hearing ability when tested in scientifically controlled, third-party conducted listening tests, so golden-eared status is a controversial subject. See Objectivist, Subjectivist.

Grace Period Profile: See Blu-ray Profile 1.0.

Gray Card: Tool used in photographic exposure, a gray card reflects 18% gray, the measurement reference used by a properly calibrated light meter. Taking a light meter reading from a gray card will yield the most accurate exposure possible. See Exposure, Light Meter.

Grounding Post: Small terminal used located near the phono inputs on a component, used for grounding a turntable.

Grounding Wire: Wire used to ground a turntable and prevent hum. It is attached to the grounding post on the receiver, amplifier or phono preamp. Some turntables and tonearms, notably products from British manufacturer, Rega, are grounded internally and do not have a grounding wire. An ungrounded turntable will produce unacceptable, loud hum so grounding is a necessity.
